My job at Insider is to run elections and oversee data stories. I was responsible for our election night coverage in 2020 and the 2022 midterms.
Beyond those contributions, I’ve written lots of things I am really proud of. Here’s some of my favorites from my time at Insider. You can read about the comics I edit over here.
Dungeons & Democracy
(Oct 4, 2022) To better understand how difficult it is for younger politicians to attain and remain in office, Insider has designed a game: Welcome to “Dungeons & Democracy,” a dice-based adventure inspired by Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. Print out your character sheet — play first as a younger member, then again as an older member — get some dice and perhaps a friend to play as game master, and get ready for a journey that could take you from your sleepy home district straight to the halls of power in the US Capitol.
The oldest government in history
(Sep 13, 2022) Today, about a quarter of Congress is over the age of 70, the highest percentage ever. At the same time, while half the country is aged 38 or younger, just 5 percent of Congress can say the same. This chart-heavy analysis tracked the age of the government through American history and looked into how the heck that happened.
The Annoyance Engine
(Mar 3, 2021) An in-depth early investigation into the economics of robocalls, why they happen and what the angle is. I looked into how on earth the phone system has become so corroded by incoming phone spam, the economics of why these scams are viable, why the government has been helpless to solve the problem, and how actually to take action.
Americans hate loud commercials.
(Mar 31, 2021) The CALM Act banned excessively loud television commercials, but it doesn’t apply to streaming TV. Consumers lodge thousands of complaints annually about loud commercials, and they’re on the rise. The FCC almost enforced the act twice in the past decade. Audio engineer experts are trying to fix it.
